Tesla improves the hands-free opening

The new Tesla software update 2024.32.3 includes a very practical feature for owners of vehicles equipped with ultra wideband (UWB) technology. It is present on the facelifted versions of the Model S, Model X and Model 3, as well as on the Cybertruck.

Avoid accidental openings

Tesla explains in its update notes that opening the trunk is now possible without touching the car or your phone, provided the latter is equipped with the Phone Key function. To do this, simply stand in front of the vehicle with the phone unobstructed, wait for an audible signal, and the frunk opens automatically.

Inaugurated last spring for the rear trunk, this technology is similar to that used for the hands-free opening of other vehicle compartments. However, only recent Tesla vehicles equipped with the UWB chip are compatible. These chips allow more precise tracking of the phone’s position relative to the vehicle, making unlocking more reliable and faster, according to Tesla. Older models, which lack this component, will not benefit from this improvement.

Another cool feature that accompanies this update is the ability to disable the automatic opening of the back and trunk when the vehicle is parked at home. Indeed, Tesla has taken into account feedback from users who have had problems with accidental openings in their garage or on their property. Now users can set this option to prevent unwanted activation. This feature is also extended to the Model X doors, which can be deactivated when you’re at home.

At the same time, Tesla continues to improve key tracking on phones, making this technology even more precise. When you approach the vehicle, either from the front or the rear, the opening should be activated more smoothly.

At the moment, frunk’s hands-free functionality is limited to users of iPhone 11 or newer, which have ultra-wideband technology. However, Tesla has confirmed that the feature will soon be available for Android smartphones in an upcoming app update.
